Maximize your warehouse space and improve efficiency with the right pallet racking solutions. Learn about different systems, including selective racks, pushback systems, and drive-in racks, and discover how they can optimize storage while minimizing labor and damage risks.
Organizations are often limited in both the space and resources they must work with. The correct pallet racking system can help maximize space, provide easy access to individual items, reduce loading and unloading time, and speed up order fulfillment. Additionally, it can help protect products from harm by keeping them off the ground level.
Becoming familiar with the different types of pallet racking available can help you decide which warehouse storage solution is best for you. The most common racking solutions include selective, pushback, drive-in/drive-thru, pallet flow, and cantilever.
A selective pallet rack consists of vertical frames and beams arranged in single or double rows, designed to store items of various sizes with direct access to each. The shelf spacing is adjustable to accommodate different load dimensions, and wire decking can be added to support non-rackable pallets.
This system reduces labor costs by eliminating the need to move multiple pallets to access a specific one, and inventory control is enhanced, as each pallet has its own position, making it easier to see what's available.
For First-In First-Out (FILO) inventory control, a pushback system is a great option. It uses nesting carts on fixed rails, where loading the front pallet pushes the others back. When the front pallet is removed, the rear pallets move forward. This system prevents jams and product damage with interlocking carts, and color-coded carts help with visual inventory. Pushback systems can offer up to 90% more storage capacity than selective rack systems.
Your partnership with ProLift begins before product is purchased. Our warehouse consultants integrate material handling systems, physical space, and the flow of material to create a streamlined, efficient process.
Drive-in/drive-thru systems are the most space-efficient storage solution and can store up to 75% more pallets than selective racking. This type of system is best suited for large-scale storage of similar items and uses First-In Last-Out (FILO) inventory control.
The trade-off with this system is that pallets in front must be moved to access those behind. Additionally, since forklifts drive directly into the racks, drive-in/drive-thru racks are more prone to damage compared to other racking structures.
Pallet Flow racking is an ideal storage system for busy warehouses due to its space-saving design and efficient product flow. The product is loaded from the back and can be easily accessed from the front, thus maintaining a First-In First-Out (FIFO) rotation, making it perfect for high-volume products. This system allows for maximum warehouse floor space utilization.
Cantilever racks are ideal for storing large, bulky, or oddly-shaped items, as no front column is blocking the way. This makes loading and unloading much quicker, and items can be placed anywhere along the rack’s length, providing better handling access.
