OSHA Training Requirements

The intended use of skid steers and front loaders is to lift, move and load materials, transport materials for short distances and perform minor excavating. To prevent accidents and fatalities, our training class is designed to educate your employees on safe operation of the equipment. Skid steer training must:

  • Be provided by the employer to instruct operators about unsafe conditions & the elimination of hazards in the work area
  • Give general instructions regarding the inspection, application & operation of the skid steer
  • Include powered industrial truck instruction (1910.178) when the skid steer is used in an industrial application as a material handling device

FAQ

Skid Steer Safety Training FAQ

Find answers to frequently asked questions about skid steer safety training, ensuring your operators are well-prepared and compliant with safety regulations.

What Are The Biggest Safety Concerns For Skid Steer Operation?

The biggest safety concerns for skid steers include rollovers, tip-overs, and collisions due to the equipment's high center of gravity and compact size. Entrapment between the skid steer and attachments or other objects is also a risk, as is operating the machine on uneven surfaces.

Operators must be cautious of pinch points, falling debris, and the potential for being crushed by the lift arms. Proper training, use of seatbelts, and regular maintenance are essential for minimizing these hazards.

What Causes A Skid Steer Rollover?

A skid steer rollover occurs when the machine tips or flips over, usually due to its high center of gravity and compact size. Rollovers can happen if the skid steer is operated on uneven or sloped surfaces, if it carries an unbalanced load, or if it turns too quickly at high speeds.

Rollovers pose a significant risk to operators, making it crucial to follow proper safety procedures, such as wearing a seatbelt, avoiding sharp turns, and ensuring balanced loads to prevent accidents.
